West Bengal Leads India in Meat Production, Ranks Fourth in Egg Output

Kolkata, India – February 2025: West Bengal has emerged as the top producer of meat in India, contributing 12.62% of the country’s total meat production. The announcement was made at the ongoing poultry fair, jointly organized by the West Bengal Poultry Federation and the Department of Animal Resources Development, at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre.

The fair, inaugurated by State Panchayat Minister Pradip Mazumdar and State Animal Resources Development Minister Swapan Debnath, aims to promote the growth of the poultry industry in West Bengal and neighboring states such as Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Manipur. The event features interactive and technical sessions designed to train poultry farmers and industry stakeholders on best practices and disease management.

West Bengal has also made significant strides in egg production. The state, which had an egg consumption rate of 18% in 2011, now ranks fourth in the country for egg production, with an impressive annual growth rate of 18.07%—far surpassing the national average of 3.18%.

The state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has placed a strong emphasis on boosting poultry production. Initiatives such as the distribution of chicks and ducklings through government programs have contributed to the sector’s rapid expansion.

Minister Swapan Debnath highlighted the importance of continuous training for poultry farmers, noting that the Department of Animal Resources Development regularly conducts workshops to help farmers combat diseases and improve production efficiency. The poultry fair provides a crucial platform for knowledge-sharing, fostering industry growth, and ensuring the sustainability of poultry businesses in the region.

With West Bengal leading the country in meat production and making remarkable progress in egg production, the state is solidifying its position as a key player in India’s poultry industry. Industry experts believe that sustained government support and farmer training will further accelerate growth in the coming years.
