US Turns to Lithuania for Eggs Amid Bird Flu Outbreak

The United States is facing a worsening egg shortage due to a severe bird flu outbreak that has devastated poultry farms and driven egg prices to new highs. In an effort to stabilize supply, the US government is now seeking egg imports from Lithuania after approaching Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands, according to Danish magazine AgriWatch.

While the responses from most European nations remain uncertain, Finland has already declined the request, citing a lack of market access agreements. With few viable options left, the US embassy in Warsaw has now turned its attention to Lithuanian poultry producers, hoping to secure much-needed egg imports.

Gytis Kauzonas, head of the Lithuanian Poultry Association, confirmed that embassy representatives have met with Lithuanian company heads to explore the potential deal. “We have provided the requested information, but we have not yet received a reply,” Kauzonas told Lithuanian business news outlet Verslo Žinios, as reported by LRT.

The news has sparked reactions online, with social media users quick to point out the irony of the US seeking European assistance. On Reddit, some users mockingly referred to the situation as “door-to-door begging,” while others recalled past tensions between the US and Europe, including former President Donald Trump’s threats of tariffs against European allies.

The ongoing egg crisis in the US underscores the importance of global trade in food security. With supply chain disruptions and disease outbreaks becoming more frequent, partnerships between poultry producers and importers like Eggora could play a crucial role in stabilizing egg markets worldwide.
