Hyderabad: On the occasion of World Protein Day, February 27, Poultry India and the Indian Poultry Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA) are raising awareness about the alarming protein deficiency in India and advocating for affordable, high-quality protein sources like chicken and eggs.
Studies indicate that 73% of Indians suffer from protein deficiency, while 17% of the population struggles with underweight issues. This nutritional gap has severe health implications, including impaired growth, weakened immune function, and an increased risk of chronic diseases, according to a press release. The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) recommends a daily protein intake of 0.8-1g per kg of body weight, with an additional 20-30g per day advised for physically active individuals.
Eggs and chicken serve as accessible and cost-effective solutions to this deficiency. A medium-sized egg provides 6g of protein, while chicken is a lean, high-quality protein source rich in essential nutrients like iron, zinc, and B vitamins.
“Many Indians prioritize carbohydrates over protein, mistakenly equating a full stomach with good health. However, protein is essential for tissue repair, enzyme and hormone production, and overall immunity,” said Uday Sing Bayas, President of Poultry India/IPEMA.
Renowned nutritionist Pooja Makhija emphasized the importance of protein intake, stating, “I recommend consuming at least 5-6 eggs per week and incorporating chicken regularly to meet essential protein requirements.”
By promoting protein-rich foods like eggs and chicken, Poultry India and IPEMA aim to bridge the nutritional gap and enhance the overall health of the Indian population.
