Bird Flu Rumours Impact Poultry Sales in Karnataka Despite No Reported Cases

While neighbouring Andhra Pradesh has seen a sharp decline in chicken and egg sales due to the recent bird flu (H5N1) outbreak, Karnataka is also experiencing a downturn, despite having no reported cases of Avian Influenza A.

The Karnataka Poultry Farmers’ Association estimates a marginal 5% dip in sales, but poultry vendors on the ground report a much steeper decline of 30% to 50%. Fear among residents, fueled by fake news on social media, along with the Mahashivaratri festival, has been identified as the primary cause of this drop in sales.

Fake News & Festivities Affect Sales

Manjesh Kumar Jadav, Vice-President of Karnataka Poultry Farmers and Breeders Association, reassured consumers: “We haven’t reported or seen any bird flu cases so far in the state. Despite that, chicken and egg sales have dipped slightly by 5%. Numerous posts on social media have made people hesitant to consume poultry. There is no panic, but these rumours have impacted sales. Even the upcoming Mahashivaratri festival has had a minor effect.”

With 20,000 poultry farmers in Karnataka producing nearly four crore broilers annually, the industry remains strong. However, misinformation continues to create uncertainty among consumers.

Vendors Feel the Heat

The bird flu rumours have raised concerns among non-vegetarian consumers, directly affecting vendors’ earnings. MD Hamid, a poultry vendor from Jayanagar, shared his concerns: “We used to have two vans come in a week with eggs, but now it has reduced to one. Our sales have dropped, affecting our income. Customers have also reduced by 20%-30% in the last two weeks. After this bird flu news, people are asking more questions about the source, quality, and freshness of the products—they are hesitant and scared.”

The Truth About Poultry Safety

Despite the rumours, experts confirm that properly cooked poultry products are safe for consumption. The poultry industry is urging consumers not to fall for misinformation and to continue supporting local farmers and vendors.

As the poultry sector works to dispel these fears, it’s crucial to stay informed and rely on verified sources for updates on food safety.
