Hyderabad: Telangana has officially reported its first case of bird flu in Nelapatla village, Choutuppal mandal of Bhuvanagiri Yadadri district. The confirmation comes after outbreaks in neighboring states of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, prompting Telangana officials to remain on high alert.
According to officials from the veterinary and animal husbandry department, thousands of poultry have also perished in Wanaparthy district. “A week ago, we received information about poultry deaths at a farm in Nelapatla,” said Dr. Shakeel Ahmed, assistant director (epidemiology) of the department. “Our team inspected the site and sent samples to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal for testing. On February 21, we received reports confirming the presence of bird flu.”
Emergency Measures Implemented
As a precautionary measure, poultry farmers within a 10-km radius of the affected area have been instructed to cull any birds showing symptoms of the disease. In Cherukupally village of Kethepally mandal, farm owners have taken swift action, culling hundreds of birds to prevent further spread. The culled poultry were buried immediately to mitigate the risk.
Meanwhile, in Wanaparthy district, another concerning wave of poultry deaths has been reported. Approximately 4,500 birds have died in Konnur village, Madanapur mandal, over the past few days, raising fears of a wider outbreak.
Officials on High Alert
Authorities are closely monitoring poultry farms across the state and have advised strict biosecurity measures, including restricting farm access, disinfecting premises, and ensuring early detection of symptoms among birds. The government is also coordinating with national agencies to prevent the further spread of the disease.
With Telangana’s poultry industry playing a crucial role in the region’s economy, officials are urging farmers to adhere to safety guidelines and report any unusual poultry deaths immediately. Consumers have been reassured that properly cooked poultry products remain safe for consumption.
