Bird Flu Crisis Eases in Andhra Pradesh: Poultry Sales Rebound

Vijayawada: The bird flu outbreak that severely impacted the poultry sector in Andhra Pradesh is now under control, leading to a steady increase in chicken sales across the state. Consumers who had initially avoided poultry products due to infection fears are now returning to purchase chicken and eggs without hesitation.

Back in early February, poultry sales took a massive hit after bird flu cases were reported in East and West Godavari, Krishna, and Guntur districts. The situation worsened when neighboring states—including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Odisha—imposed a ban on eggs and broiler chickens from Andhra Pradesh. This led to a major crisis for poultry farmers, many of whom faced heavy financial losses. The drastic drop in demand forced several poultry farms and chicken shops to shut down temporarily.

However, there is good news now! Officials from the Andhra Pradesh Animal Husbandry Department have confirmed that the spread of bird flu has been effectively contained. This success is attributed to strict biosecurity measures implemented by farmers and rising temperatures, which helped curb the virus.

To restore public confidence, the Andhra Pradesh Poultry Traders’ Federation has been actively organizing awareness campaigns and hosting chicken festivals across the state. These events highlight that properly cooked poultry at temperatures above 70°C eliminates any risk of infection. Encouraged by these initiatives, large numbers of people are participating in the festivals, enjoying delicious poultry dishes without fear.

Poultry Prices on the Rise

As demand rebounds, poultry prices are steadily increasing. According to the Amaravati Poultry Traders’ Association, the price of broiler chicken, which had dropped to â‚ą160 per kg on March 1, has now surged to â‚ą220 per kg. If demand continues to rise, prices could reach â‚ą240 per kg in the coming weeks.

The revival of the poultry sector in Andhra Pradesh brings much-needed relief to farmers and traders who suffered heavy losses during the outbreak. With consumer confidence returning and businesses reopening, the poultry industry is set for a strong comeback.
